Shakespeare's ROMEO AND JULIET Receives Rare All-Male Ensemble Production

New York, New York- Tragedians of the City make their premiere outing with an all-male version of ROMEO AND JULIET, William Shakespeare's mythic tale of young passion and ancient unrest, directed by Anya Saffir. With original music composed by Cormac Bluestone (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), ROMEO AND JULIET begins performances on Wednesday, February 29 for a limited engagement through Saturday, March 17. Press Opening is Sunday, March 4 at 8 PM. Performances are at Chernuchin Theater at the American Theater of Actors (314 West 54th Street, between 8th & 9th Avenues). The performance schedule is Wednesday – Sunday at 8 PM, with Saturday matinees at 2 PM on March 10 and March 17. The regular ticket price is $20. Two teenagers set their love against the weight of the hate and violence of Verona. Married in secret, they hope for some reprieve from their families ancient feud, but hope fails when new blood is spilled, and Romeo and Juliet find themselves alone against the world. Their tragic end offers a new beginning and a cruel cure for the city's unrest.

In a style inspired by Italian neo-realist films like Rome and Open City, director Anya Saffir helms an all-male ensemble cast that allows this classic story to be seen anew.

Michael Piazza as Romeo and John Early (30 Rock) as Juliet lead the cast of 15 that includes Paul Corning, Sam Dash, Clayton Early, Paul Eddy, Chris Hale, Matt Hanson, Glenn Hergenhahn, Will Irons, Dan Jones, Vladimir Margolin, John-Michael Scapin, Scott Walker, and Ben Weaver.

The design team includes set and lights by Gabriel Evansohn and costumes by Katja Andreiev. The fight choreographer is Turner Smith. The dance choreographer is Alison Beatty.

Anya Saffir (director). Credits include The Caucasian Chalk Circle for Pipeline Theater (ITBA Award for Outstanding Show); Hamlet for Orpheus Productions (NY Innovative Theater Award nomination); Three Sisters for Muse Theater; The Illusion at The Abe Burrows at NYU; original plays by Tom Donaghy, Kate Robin, Scott Organ and Heather MacDonald for Atlantic Theater Company's 10×25 Play Festival and New Works Series; Twelfth Night, Pericles, The Winter's Tale, andAs You Like It at the Atlantic Acting School, and most recently her first piece of children's theater: The True Story of the Three Little Pigs! (Classic Stage Company/ATC). On the faculty at Atlantic and Tisch School of the Arts at NYU.

Cormac Bluestone (composer) is the musical director for the television show, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He was co-artistic director of Third Man Productions, which produced The Barhopper Series in New York and Los Angeles, Shrug like you mean it, and Bloody Mary. Most recently, Cormac composed music for the highly acclaimed Pipeline Theater production, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, for which he won the New York Innovative Theater Award for Original Music.
